Dental & vision

Dental and vision coverage that works with your dentist.

Most health plans for adults leave out routine dental and vision care. We help you add it, starting with the dentist and eye doctor you already see.

Quick answer

Dental and vision insurance are separate plans you can add to almost any health coverage, or buy on their own. Dental plans help pay for cleanings, fillings and bigger work. Vision plans help pay for eye exams, glasses and contacts. The right plan depends mostly on whether your dentist and eye doctor are in its network and what work you expect in the next year.

Who this page is for: Anyone without dental or vision through work, people leaving an employer plan, the self-employed, and families who want to keep a specific dentist.

What dental plans usually cover

  • Preventive care: cleanings, exams and routine X-rays, often covered at the highest level.
  • Basic work: fillings and simple extractions.
  • Major work: crowns, bridges, root canals and similar care, often with a waiting period on newer plans.
  • Orthodontics: included on some plans and left out of others, so ask before you choose.

What vision plans usually cover

  • A yearly eye exam with an in-network eye doctor.
  • Frames or contacts up to an allowance.
  • Lenses and common lens options, depending on the plan.

What we check before you choose

  • Whether your dentist and eye doctor are in the network.
  • Waiting periods for basic and major dental work, and whether any apply to you.
  • The yearly maximum the dental plan will pay.
  • What the premium adds up to over a year compared with the care you expect.

How it fits with your health plan

Dental and vision plans sit alongside your health plan; they don’t replace it. If you’re comparing a private health plan, COBRA or a group plan, we’ll show you what adding dental and vision does to the total yearly cost.
